's fanfiction "The Invisible Sun".
There are few people who can truly say they understand Dexter. If you asked the PowerPuff Girls, they'd would wonder what exactly there was to understand.
Dexter's just a regular 11 year old boy...well, he's a little short maybe...oh, and then there's that whole 'genius' thing and his secret lab and inexplicable russian accent...
That's what Dexter likes about them. They see him as a kid like them before they recognize him for his abnormal gifts.
Mandark may be Dexter's arch rival, but he can't deny that he and Dexter are peas in a pod. It isn't easy growing up a boy genius.
The battle lines are unspoken, but understood by both parties. Whenever an outside party crosses those lines to rise up against either of them, the two kindred spirits work through the hard times together (even though they still seem fight each other every step of the way); but any other time, anything's goes in the battle of the brains.
They'd both die before they would ever even think it to themselves, but they're good for each other.
So, I drew them walking home from school together...the PowerPuff Girls go to Pokey Oaks Elementary all the way out in Townsville, but as soon as school lets out, they fly all the way out to Hubert Elementary and are usually landing in front of the school just as Dexter comes out the door.
Before the PowerPuff girls, Dexter and Mandark used to walk home together (didn't mean they had to like it or be nice to each other...it was purely for the logic of safety in numbers...whenever either was caught alone, the bullies showed no mercy).
Now that Dexter has such powerful escorts, he doesn't need to walk home with Mandark...but, he and Mandark do live on the same street, and really, no one deserves to get beat up all the time; so Dexter doesn't bring any attention to the matter when Mandark joins them on the walk home from school every day.
In the picture, Dexter is excitedly recounting something that happened at school that day while Blossom and Bubbles listen...but Buttercup, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have her full attention on what Dexter is saying...

I can totally see Dexter and Mandark having their own unique brand of friendship. They may not like one another, but each would certainly miss the other if they were denied their verbal sparring matches.
